Review: Special K - Chocolatey Delight
I like cereal. And not just for breakfast. For my inbetwen meal or late night snacks once in a while I'll grab a bowl of cereal.
It's much better for you than ice cream, brownies or potato chips, and there's only about a thousand different kinds of cereal at the supermarket to choose from.
Very rarely do I buy a cereal that isn't on sale. Why? Because cereal can be flippin' expensive. The good stuff is usually over $4.00 a box. And some goofy pumpkin seed flax granola cereal that we used to get a lot is now over $6.00 a box. Are you kidding me? $6.00 a box?? Jesus... So yeah, we no longer buy that cereal. And I know what you are thinking, "Curt, you can get the cheaper, off brand cereal in bags below the shelves." Yes, I am aware that these cereals exist. They have names very similar to the name brands, such as Choco Puffs, or Dyno-Bites. But I choose to buy the name brand stuff because it tastes better. Life is too short to buy crap cereal to save a buck. Sure, you save money...but then you are stuck eating a lesser cereal. I prefer to stick to my method of buying brand name cereal when on sale, that way you get the best of both worlds...good cereal at a good price.
Usually there are a bunch of different kinds of cereal on sale (I dare you to go to Schnucks and not see at least 10 different cereals on sale), and I pick out a box or two. I usually try to get something that Kashi makes or some other type that is semi-good for you, or at least not as bad as Lucky Charms.
Today, I picked up a box of Kellogg's Special K Chocolatey Delight, which was on sale for $2.50 a box, which is a good price. I really don't like getting cereal that is over $3.00. That's kind of the line.
So I had a bowl tonight, and I wasn't a fan...and I'll tell you why.
If I buy a cereal that is called, "Chocolatey Delight", I fully expected it to actually taste chocolatey, as I am sure you would expect the same given the name of Chocolatey Delight, which implies you will be delighted with how chocolately this cereal tastes. But unfortunately this cereal pretty much tasted like plain old Special K, except when you got a piece of chocolate in your spoonful (which wasn't that often)...then it was like Special K with a piece of waxy chocolate that didn't have a lot of chocolate flavor. When I neared the end of the bowl, I discovered that there were more chocolate pieces in the bowl than I had first though. But the problem was that they all sank to the bottom, so at the end of the bowl, I have like 15 pieces of chocolate. I know what you are thinking..."But Curt, a bunch of chocolate at the bottom of a cereal bowl must have been a delight!"...were you thinking that? I thought you were. This would have been kinda cool, except that the chocolate was waxy tasting...in other words, not so chocolatey...so not so great.
This cereal pulls the same thing that a lot of cereals do nowadays. It's a little thing I like to call, "False Advertising" (I know what you are thinking..."that's not a new term Curt"...well, it is when you capitalize it like I do). Companies will call a cereal "Blueberry" something or "chocolate" this-and-that, but when you pour that first bowl and you see the cereal coming out of the box and into the bowl...there's no blueberries...you keep pouring...nothing...keep going...THERE! You saw one...and then another one...and then the bowl is full. What the hell? The special ingredient that actually got me to buy this box of cereal ends up barely making an appearance in the bowl. My bowl of Chocolately Delight should have a chocolate taste to each bite, or darn near every bite. Otherwise, what's the point?
In my case, the chocolate all sank to the bottom. Kellogg's needs to embed that chocolate into the rice & wheat flakes so it is more evenly distrubuted about the cereal and not sink to the bottom of the bowl. But in this case, that method wouldn't have done a lot to improve the taste as the chocolate tasted waxy...kind of like a cheap chocolate eater bunny on Easter.
My advice to Kellogg's?
Use better tasting chocolate and embed the chocolate into the rice & wheat flakes. Then you may have something. Of course, if they did that then they would probably charge more per box, and I'd never get to try it anyway.
I don't think I'll be buying this cereal again unless it is on sale and I am in the mood for waxy chocolate that progressively increases in number as I reach the end of the bowl...kind of like a Sundae Cone where a big chunk of chocolate is at the bottom of the cone...but the only difference is that sundae cones actually are a chocolately delight.
